SEO – Choosing the right keywords for your business

Posted By: Jason

Search engine optimisation (SEO) should be your first port of call for online marketing. Ensuring that your website comes up high in search engine rankings can, however, seem like a daunting and sometimes impossible task.

The ticket to organic high rankings across the different search engines for your site is to know what your keywords and use them to your advantage. In layman’s terms, what do your potential customers type in online when they are / should they be looking for your site?

Once you have identified the words searched most frequently which relate to your website, it is time to set realistic goals in terms of how you can best capitalise from the information you now have. Its often the case that people underestimate the work that goes into ranking high (in the first 1 to 2 pages) on search engines. Just as the most important thing you can do to ensure your business is successful is to guarantee that you fill a gap in the market, initially, your keywords need to be popular enough for your site to gain attention but specific enough to rule out losing customers to your competitors.

Would it be pragmatic, for example, to assume that, as a new cafe owner, you would be able to dominate the existing search engine rankings and land your business’s site at the top with the keywords ‘cafe’ or, hypothetically, ‘London cafe’? Probably not. Of course, it is important to have long term objectives and with the right website and consistent hard work, those keywords can be used to put your cafe at the top of the search engine results. However, to begin with, your time and effort as a business would most likely be better off choosing keywords with a reasonably high search but a lower number of competitors. Back to our London cafe analogy, more specific keywords, such as ‘cafe Islington’ or ‘new cafe City of London’, will be a more prosperous place to start.

The benefits of ranking high on search engines range are enormous. From an increase in traffic to your site to a large range of potential customers, SEO is something which can advance your business reach and turn over easily, when done correctly.
